How Income Tax Works in Australia
Australia uses a progressive tax system โ the more you earn, the higher the rate you pay on your earnings above each threshold. The Stage 3 tax cuts (effective 1 July 2024) reduced the second bracket from 19% to 16% and the third from 32.5% to 30%. Below are the 2024-25 and 2025-26 tax brackets.
| Income Range | Marginal Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 โ $18,200 | 0% |
| $18,201 โ $45,000 | 16% |
| $45,001 โ $135,000 | 30% |
| $135,001 โ $190,000 | 37% |
| $190,001+ | 45% |
Medicare Levy
2% of your taxable income. Funds Australia's public health system. Exempt if income is under ~$26,000.
LITO Offset
Low Income Tax Offset of up to $700 for earners under $37,500. Reduces income tax payable automatically.
Superannuation
Your employer pays 12% of your salary into your super fund for 2025-26. This is on top of your salary.
2025-26 Key Changes: The superannuation guarantee rate increased to 12% from 1 July 2025. Tax brackets are the same as 2024-25 (Stage 3 cuts apply โ 16% and 30% rates). The Stage 3 cuts reduced the second bracket from 19% to 16% and the third from 32.5% to 30%, benefiting most middle-income Australians.
